In Fall 2023, I decided to make a few samples of a coat I had been toying with in my mind for a wee while. I wanted them to be exceptionally luxurious, a reflection of my style and sense of fun, but as always, with a huge amount of attention given to the details.

These were such a storm! Everytime I wore them out people would stop me and ask for the details to purchase. Being bright candy colors, with neat features like pockets and my artistic lining, they were a hit!

Two weeks before NYFW ‘24 I was asked whether I would like to present my fur and cashmere in a debut runway show with the fabulous Flying Solo in SoHo. It was an incredible opportunity that I could not miss; a dream I have had since the age my daughters are now. SoOoo out came the sewing machine, and to the paper for sketches. I hope you feel invigorated, inspired and uplifted by the collections I present to you.

I arrived in New York in Sept 2022, like many other immigrants before me with one suitcase, $5K, some big ass dreams and two wide eyed little daughters staring up at me for support and guidance. In a new culture, in some ways similar to New Zealand, and in others very different, it has been an incredible journey to bring my dreams to life in my favorite city in the world. It has been a very emotional experience to watch my designs walk the runway; to witness the joy and pride in my daughter’e eyes, the same age now as I was when I started seeing the possibilities the world had for me.

I love animals, I love our environment. In my country New Zealand, we hunt, farm, fish, dive, grow and forage. My family life was split between city; Wellington and country farm; Wairarapa. It was common for me growing up to trade our meat, eggs, fish & crayfish for other produce, services and things. I am not disrespecting animals by using their furs or skins, but rather celebrating them. We have a life not detached from animals but one where we can show respect by glorifying them. Farmers love our animals three times. When they are born, when we care for them and when they are consumed.

The manufacturing of faux fur is heinously terrible for the environment, and more is coming out about how terrible it is to wear for our heath. It is not biodegradable, is made from synthetic fibers and non-renewable, petroleum-based products and releases micro plastics into the waterways during production and into the wearer’s skin when wearing it. Faux fur is not durable, sags over time and does not retain its initial condition, hence why enormous amounts of fast fashion based faux fur is discarded into landfills every year. Imitation fur does not insulate like real furs and leathers and is often not coveted or passed down in families from generation to generation like its real counterparts. The production of faux fur can involve exploitative labor practices and environmental damage, similar to other synthetic textiles.

I believe that using fur, leather and animal products in a compassionate and mindful way, can be immensely eco-conscious. We have a duty to the soul that has died to create a beautiful product from them that lasts for years. This type of fashion combats frivolous fast fashion consumption, but it does require duty from the designers to be mindful about where the furs and base products are sourced. I am also looking at ways to up-cycling existing fur coats and vintage leather items and re-style them into covetable garments and accessories which continue their life-cycle indefinitely. A beautiful fur jacket or leather dress is not an item that you buy every day, they are items to be treasured and passed down to next generations.

𝓜𝓸𝓮𝓷𝓪 𝓜𝓸𝔁𝓱𝓪𝓶 fashion is slow fashion; one off luxury hand made pieces which are coveted and kept for a lifetime.

I am humbled by the help and support I have recieved from the community towards my creations, both in New York an around the world. It is with these wonderful souls that the magic happens, from Flying Solo; my stockist in SoHo an collaborator at NYFW, leather smiths, furriers, to the fabric stores, even parking attendants; the positivity has been uplifting and boyant.
